Family sources told Vanguard that Agaezichi aged 22, was having a love affair with his mother’s sister, but his mother, Blessing, warned against the relationship, describing it as a taboo in Igbo land.

However, on Saturday, June 16, 2018, the deceased reportedly met the two ‘love birds’ at home and warned them to desist from the love affairs, but Agaezichi pounced on his mother and beat her to death. Everybody in this village has been warning the boy against the love affair because it is a taboo in Igbo land. Any time his mother warns him to stop the love affair with her sister, Agaezichi will beat the woman.

“On Saturday, his mother saw him with the girl and warned about the consequences of their love affair and Agaezich rained blows on the woman. She fell to the ground and died. When they saw, she has died, they ran away but Agaezichi was arrested by some youths while his girlfriend escaped.”

Kamil Mahmud, a human resources manager, has alleged being threatened by some operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARs.

The 26-year-old claimed that the men threatened to drink his blood for allegedly disrespecting them. It was gathered that Mahmud had driven behind his brother’s car to the Ikeja area for an interview on a radio station on Thursday, June 14, 2018.

Kamil Mahmud

They were returning on Friday, June 15, 2018, when three policemen allegedly accosted them at the Agidingbi area of Ikeja.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday, June 17, 2018, Mahmud said he was about parking by the roadside when the operatives cocked their guns and threatened to shoot.

He said, “I waved my hand to tell them that I was not running away and I just wanted to find somewhere to park. I was thinking it was going to be a normal civilian police conversation. But I realised the situation was getting more aggressive even before I got down from the car.

“One of the policemen asked me to come down from the car and told my friends and my brothers, who were driving behind me, to stay back.

“I came down and he said he wanted to search the car. I told him to go ahead. But before he even tried to search, he had started manhandling me.

“I told him that he had not even asked for my name or who owned the car I was driving and what I did for a living.

“He, however, searched me and the car without finding anything incriminating. “I don”t drive with my shoes on; so, when I got down, I was barefooted. I told the three officers more than five times that I wanted to get my shoes, but they looked at me with no response.

“The moment I tried to get my shoes, the policemen went berserk and started slapping and hitting me. One of them was shouting that he drank blood and he was ready to drink my blood. He pulled my shirt and trousers and threw me into their vehicle, a Sienna, without a number plate.”

According to Mahmud, a passerby who wanted to intervene was threatened with a cutlass. He added that he had attempted to beg the officers when one of them further beat him with a cutlass.

The Edo State indigene said, “As I sat on the back seat of their car, one of them put handcuffs in my hands. They never told me what I did wrong.

“The one who assaulted me with the cutlass started the car and drove to Ikeja GRA. On getting to the Area F Police Command, the officers refused to enter the premises and I told them that they should take me inside the station and file a report because I really wanted to know what my offence was. They shouted at me that I still had the mouth to talk.

“The officer driving had a bottle of gin in front of the car; he was drinking and driving. They later negotiated with my brothers and demanded N15, 000.

“My brothers went to use the ATM at Conoil Filling Station, but the ATM did not dispense cash. Then one of the policemen got angry and started driving towards Oba Akran Road. When we got there, he parked and waited for my brothers.

“My brothers came and told them that they were able to get N8, 000. They collected it, removed the handcuffs from my hand and told me to get out of their car.”

Mahmud demanded the arrest and prosecution of the policemen, adding that he was robbed by the law enforcement agents. He said the cops wore the F-SARS jackets and had guns with police tags.

Chike Oti, the Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer, said,“They are not SARS officials because SARS officials in Lagos State have uniforms that have code numbers with which they can be identified easily and SARS officials in Lagos State are under the instruction of the Commissioner of Police not to conduct stop and search in Lagos State.

“However, the complainant should come forward to give us vital information about the officers, so that we can arrest whoever the people might be; but I know that they are not SARS officials.”

Six persons died in the Saturday night attack in Mangu. Four died early on Sunday, June 1, 2018, in the Barkin Ladi incident.

The attacks followed those of June 23, 2018, when scores died.

Confirming the continuous killings despite the curfew and heavy military presence, Major Adam Umar, the media officer of the task force, said: “The OPSH notes with dismay, the continued attitude of some criminals in the state that are bent on making the state ungovernable through some unwarranted attacks on some communities and innocent villagers despite the tireless efforts of the task force.

“On receiving the distress call, our men mobilised to the scene immediately to repel the attackers. The assailants who were given hot chase by our men escaped with various degrees of injuries while four of them were arrested.

“However, it is regrettable that before our men could get to the scene of the attack, four persons had already been killed by the attackers.

Amaraizu said the feat was achieved by the command’s operatives from the 9th Mile Division on Monday at about 2.30 p.m.

He said that the police operatives, through a well-coordinated operation, rescued Pa Obi and his driver, one Ishaya John, unhurt in Egede axis of Udi Forest of Enugu State along Old Egede Affa road in the state.

The police spokesman said that the operatives also recovered Pa Obi’s Toyota Prado jeep.

“It was gathered that Pa Michael Obi and his driver were abducted along Makurdi-Enugu Road on June 29, 2018, in the afternoon on his way from Jos in his grey-coloured Toyota Prado jeep with registration number: MUS 604 CG and taken to an unknown destination through the thick forest part of the area.

“It was further gathered that the abductors started calling to demand a ransom of N10 million before police operatives acted on intelligence information and swooped on them.

“In the process of the rescue, a gun duel ensued between police operatives and the kidnappers which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued,’’ he said.

Amaraizu said that Pa Obi extolled the efforts of the police which led to their rescue.

He said that Mikel’s father thanked Mohammad Danmallam, the Commissioner of Police, and the operatives for their efforts, saying: “I am happy with the police operatives’ performance’’.

The Ogun State Police Command on Monday, July 2, 2018, had paraded six suspected kidnappers including a legal practitioner from Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.

According to Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer, the suspects were arrested following intelligence investigation which revealed that they had demanded up to 250 million Naira from a businessman to avoid being kidnapped or killed.

He told Channels Television that “based on that, the businessman wrote a petition to the command and the command commenced an investigation into the case.

“We embarked on a technical investigation and those people suspected that they were being trailed. But we have a recording of all their transactions, but the greatest surprise was that the case involved a legal practitioner who happened to be the one to take on bail, the arrested criminal in the first instance.

“It is a thing of surprise to us that somebody who ought to know what the law says, to uphold the law, is now aiding and abetting the criminals.

“He was even involved in threatening, in making moves to extort money from the businessman.

“The said Alhaji Sakirudeen Olufowobi, did not know that we were trailing him, having all his transactions and conversations with these hoodlums on record.

“At the end of the day, we were able to come up with a very concrete evidence and that is why we got him arrested and the people he was planning with”.

The suspects have, however, denied the allegations levelled against them. But the police spokesperson says they will be arraigned in a competent court of jurisdiction, soon.

Eight families have showed up for DNA testing in connection with the Otedola Link Bridge fire in Lagos which shocked the nation.

The Head of the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, Dr Richard Somiari, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, July 5, 2018 in Lagos.

Somiari, a forensic expert, said that more families were still expected to visit the facility in connection with the deadly explosion that occurred on June 28.

“There are two categories of people that come for the testing, those who believe strongly that their family member died and needs to be identified.

“The other category includes people who just do not know because the family person is missing.

“So, we will expect that those two categories of people will come.

Somiari said that the duration needed to complete the DNA process and results interpreted could not be ascertained because of protocols that must be followed, due to the magnitude of the accident.

According to him, there are two processes involved, including the actual DNA matching and the process by the pathologist, who takes samples from the remains that were recovered.

“The actual process in our laboratory is fast. The thing is the quality of the sample that is coming from the victim.

“So, until we get those samples from the pathologist we do not know how long it will take.

“If it is significantly degraded, then it means we have to go through multiple steps of isolation and clean up before we do the profile generation.

“These samples are not as clean as reference samples and we do not want to make a mistake in the process.

“We realise that everybody will like to get the result fast and bring a closure to this but at the same time we want to be careful. “

On July 2, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, confirmed that 12 people died in the incident.

Idris said the government would be conducting DNA forensic studies so that the right bodies could be handed over to the appropriate families for proper burial.

According to him, the entire cost of management and treatment of the surviving victims and DNA forensics for the dead and their families would be borne by the state government.

A man believed to be in his early 20s Wednesday afternoon, set himself ablaze in the Omole Phase 1 area of Ojodu, Lagos.

The man, whose identity has not be confirmed, was said to had armed himself with a gallon of petrol and lighter and started narrating how Nigerians were going through hardship.

A witness, Ben Chinedu, told Daily Sun that,“I was going out when I saw a crowd and I stopped to make enquiries. I saw a young man in his 20s; he was armed with a gallon of fuel. He was shouting on top of his voice saying that he was tired of life.

“He narrated how he had been running from one person to other for assistance and everyone was saying things were difficult. He told people who cared to listen that the country was under a spell that cannot be cleansed.

“He said there was no hope and future for the youth, he could no longer bear the ‘suffering-and-smiling’ syndrome and pretence showed by most people. He threatened to kill himself, but people thought he was making empty threats.

“He poured the liquid on his body and brought out a lighter. He ignited fire on his body and he was burning. We started pouring water on him, but the fire had done enough damage before we put it out. We called the police who came to the scene and picked the man who was unconscious by then.

“We don’t know the man and where he came from.”

Police public relations officer, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the story, said the man was being treated at the Lagos State Emergency Centre, 7-Up area.

Oti said: “Divisional Police Officer, Ojodu, received a distress call that a man set himself ablaze and raced to the scene with some officers. When the police arrived, they put out the fire and rushed the man to the Lagos State Emergency Centre, where he is being treated. The man is still unconscious as he received third-degree burns. He is still unconscious as I am talking to you, but the Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO in charge of Ojodu to take the man who attempted suicide to the hospital.

“it is a suicide attempt as people saw him set himself ablaze. It was not the usual jungle justice by a mob.

“He was the person who planned how to kill himself. The CP has ordered the DPO to investigate and find out who the man is and why he decided to take his life in a most agonising manner. We also call on members of the public who are looking for their missing relations to contact the Ojodu Police Station of the PPRO’s office to ascertain who the man is.”

My Daughter’s Boyfriend Murdered, Buried Her In His Room – Former Ondo Deputy Governor

Lasisi Oluboyo, the immediate past deputy governor of Ondo State,  has said his late daughter, Khadijat, was used for ritual.

Miss Oluboyo, who was a final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, was found dead in the house of Mr. Adeyemi Alao, popularly known as Q.S on Sunday, July 8, 2018.

Speaking with journalists on Monday in his Akure home, the former deputy governor stated that her daughter was killed for ritual purposes by her boyfriend who invited her to his house.

“The boy killed her for ritual purposes. It is not that the girl was not well-fed. The lady did not go there on her own volition,” he said.

Oluboyo showed journalists the picture of the grave dug by the boy in which the remains of her daughter was buried and covered with a mattress on which the boy was sleeping.

“The boy dug a grave in his room, buried her and put his foam on the grave and was sleeping on the grave.

“She was not found under the bed, the boy has no bed.

“When we tried our best, we organised prayers. When we finished with the prayers, we learnt he got the heat and said he cannot continue.

“We were told he rushed out and confessed to his sister. He said this is what I did; I cannot cope anymore, help me carry a sack. The sister rushed to the father and narrated the story,” Oluboyo said.

The former deputy governor said they initially thought the matter was a kidnap case because a message was sent that they should wait for a negotiating team.

He said the message was sent with one of the numbers in her daughter’s bag because she had four  mobile telephone numbers.

“We got to know that Khadijat was missing on July 2. Somebody called us that she was missing, we started looking her.

“We got in touch with her friends in the school. The closest friend told us that they finished lecture on Thursday. They took the same motorcycle to their houses.

“On Friday, they had no lecture, but when the friend got to the lecture room on Monday and did not see her, she started calling her numbers.

“I sent the money for her feeding on Friday; the usual thing was that when she got bank alert, she would call me back to thank me. But that day, I did not get any response from her. I told her mother, and she started calling her. The phones were switched off.

“But by Monday, we started calling her number and it did not get through. Later, the phone rang, they picked it and we were hearing underground sound. The phone switched off again. Later, we got a text that the mouth piece of the phone is not good and that she would call when she changed the SIM card to another phone. With that, we thought everything was settled. We were still waiting anxiously for the call,” he said.

Princess Khadijat, daughter of former governor of Ondo State
Princess Khadijat, daughter of former governor of Ondo State, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo

Oluboyo said from what the boy’s father told him, Khadijat and Adeyemi were dating and that they met each other at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.

“When we started looking for the girl, the father called me, he said he is the father of Adeyemi, he said my daughter came to their house on Thursday and left on Friday morning.

He said she used to come in the past but stopped suddenly, and that she is the type of girl he wanted his son to marry.

The former deputy governor said: “I now said we are not talking of marriage and that we are looking for her. The man called and started praying.

“When we called, the boy said she came on Thursday and left on Friday. It was the power of the prayer that forced the boy to rush out and confessed to his sister.

“To me, I don’t want anything. God’s judgment is more than human’s verdict. The danger is that if you allow him to go scot free, he would do it again.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, would address journalists on the matter.

He said the command had begun investigation on the matter.

He said he wanted Alao to face the wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

The news went viral on social media when a friend of the deceased, Bolanle Victoria, took to Twitter to declare that she had been murdered by her boyfriend.

Adeyemi Alao, the boyfriend of Miss Khadijat Oluboyo, the slain daughter of former Ondo State Deputy Governor Lasisi Oluboyo, has denied involvement in her death.

Khadijat, the 25-year-old final year student of Adekunle Ajasin University, AAU, Akungba-Akoko, was found dead on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the home of her boyfriend in Akure, the state capital.

Alao denied involvement in Khadijat’s death when he faced journalists on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at the headquarters of the state police command in Akure.

According to him, it was the slain girl who brought two boys into his room, who eventually killed her.

The suspect said he had dated the late Khadijat for four years before they parted ways in 2015, adding that they only reconciled after the last Ramadan celebration.

Alao, who completed his national service under the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in 2017, said he had no reason to kill her because he hoped to use her father’s connection to get a job.

The suspect said the late Khadijat was in his house last Thursday because of her project, which he claimed to be helping her to do.

He said they had finished chapter one and her supervisor had approved it, adding that she came for final correction to move to chapter two.

Alao said the girl later travelled to Lagos last Friday to buy some wrist watches but she forgot to drop her project with him and promised to return to school from Lagos.

“Meanwhile, on Saturday, she snapped the soft and hard copies of her project to me on my WhatsApp for correction.

“On Monday, I believed she was already in school when she sent me a text message to send her N2,000. But I was able to send only N1,000.

“So, I was surprised when I heard a knock on my door later in the day and she entered my room.

“She later told me that she wanted to receive some visitors in my place. Few minutes later, she brought two boys in. I was not surprised because that was not her first time of bringing people into my house.

“Later, when they came in, we exchanged greetings and I left them in the room. But after 30 minutes, one of the boys called me in and I discovered he held a small gun in his hand while the other boy was on her, naked.

“I heard Khadijat saying: ‘I will not tell anybody.’ The boy strangled her to death and threatened me not to shout or else they would kill me.

“They later forced me to find a digger with which they dug the ground in my room and buried her. They are the ones that killed and buried her. I could not shout after they left because of the implication of what has happened, for I was sure nobody would believe me.

“On the fifth day, I was not comfortable anymore. So, I exhumed her body and confided in my younger brother who advised that we should inform our father about the development.

“It was my father who informed the police before I was arrested.”

Police spokesman Femi Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, who paraded Adeyemi with other suspects, said he would soon be charged to court after the completion of investigation.

The spokesman described the suspect’s defence as infantile. He said Alao implicated some people, adding that the command had been trying to get them.

Joseph said: “His defence is very infantile and does not hold any water. I am very sure in the next few hours he should begin to talk.”

On the suspect’s arrest, the spokesman said the command was alerted by an informant while the police responded and arrested the suspect at his home.

He said: “We met the suspect, who happened to be the boyfriend to the late Khadijat, in his room, trying to pack the remains in a sack and this is to tell you that he killed Khadijat.

“According to him, he mentioned some other suspects, now at large, but we found that he single-handedly looked for digger and shovel and dug a grave in his room and buried Khadijat.

“The police immediately swooped in on him, and on close observation of his home, it was discovered that the suspect had actually buried the missing girl for six days and was planning to exhume the remains and finally dispose them.

“According to him, he was not comfortable with the stench from the decomposed body as it was not properly buried.

“The suspect will soon appear in court while effort is on to arrest the suspected accomplices.”

Patience Amuko, a 52-year-old housewife, on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, escaped mob attack in Sapele, Delta State after a police officer identified as Mercy Benson, claimed that she found her at the back of her courtyard during the wee hours, confessing to being a witch.

It was gathered that the courtyard can only be accessed through the police officer’s sitting room which at about 5.10am when the incident reportedly happened was still locked. The police woman, shocked to see the woman, reportedly alerted CSP Ekong Bassey, the Divisional Police Officer, who then took the intruder to the Sapele main station not far from the scene of the incident.

It was further gathered that the visibly-troubled woman, who claimed to be a witch, said she was on her way back from a mission in Benin City in Edo State, when she suddenly found herself in the courtyard.

Speaking to journalists , the DPO, Bassey said: “Mercy said she heard a sound as if something fell and when she came out, she was shocked to find this woman at the back of her house which is a courtyard, only through the main room you can get to the back of the house that was highly fenced; she then raised the alarm before calling me, the DPO, and I then took the lady to the station”.

But one Bridget Amuko, who claimed to be the woman’s daughter, told an online newspaper “My mother is not a witch, they wanted to kill her, she is mentally ill, and has been sick even before, we was born. We heard the shout and neighbours moved into the place, thank God the Police DPO came to her rescue. She is not a witch!”

No fewer than 73 persons were confirmed dead and about 50 villages burnt following a renewed violence between the Hausa-Fulani and Yandang communities in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The state chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Sahabi Mahmoud, told journalists on Friday, July 13, 2018 in Jalingo that the hostilities, which started on July 5, has claimed the lives of more than 23 of his members.

He said that over 3,000 displaced Fulani and Hausa people, mainly women and children, who fled the area, are currently taking refuge at the Muslim Council Secretariat in Jalingo and other neighbouring local government areas.

Mahmoud lamented that it was “unfortunate” that since the displaced persons arrived the Muslim Council in Jalingo, no government official had visited the camp or provided any relief material to the victims.

On his part, an elder of the Yandang community, Mr Aaron Artimas, said more than 50 persons from the side of the Yandang and other tribes in the area were confirmed dead as a result of the conflicts.

Artimas noted that the Hausa-Fulanis, Yandang, Mumuye, and Yoti, among other tribes, had lived in the area as brothers and sisters without problems for centuries.

He blamed the recent recurring conflicts on incitement from people outside the area who wanted to remain relevant politically.

“Some militia from neighbouring Adamawa State have infiltrated Babagasa, a border village between Taraba and Adamawa, and have been wreaking havoc on all the surrounding villages in Lau Local Government of Taraba.

“Villages such as Tikule, Bariki, Santuraki, Budong, Mbonding and Panti-Ladda, among others, were burnt by the militia.

“Over 2,000 displaced persons from the affected villages are currently taking refuge at the Central Primary School, Jalingo.

“Some are in other villages like Sunkani, Apawa, Zing and Bali all in Taraba, while several others fled to Gorobi, Sabon-Gida, Bujum and Mayo-Belwa in Adamawa State.

Since the arrival of IDPs in their current locations, they have been living at the mercy of God and good spirited individuals who have been taking food to them.

“As I speak with you now, since the conflicts erupted in Lau Local Government on July 5, there is no presence of security while the people continue to kill themselves,’’ he explained.

However, the Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police David Misal, who confirmed the incident, said the number of casualties was still being compiled, while normalcy has been restored in the affected areas.
